Frequently Asked Question

  • Is it normal for an ICD to move?
ICDs are typically slightly larger than a pacemaker. If the device feels loose or wiggles in the pocket under the skin, report this to your healthcare provider. Excessive movement can cause a detachment of the generator from the wires, or the wires from the heart muscle, and the device will not work properly.
  • What are the three types of ICD?
Single-chamber ICDs use a lead (wire) that is attached to the right ventricle to deliver energy, if needed. Dual-chamber ICDs use leads that are attached to the right atrium and the right ventricle. The biventricular ICD provides cardiac resynchronization therapy for patients who have had heart failure.
  • Is ICD risky?
There is a risk of bleeding and bruising, damage to the artery, nerves, and veins requiring surgery or transfusions, blood clots and swelling and infection. There is also a risk of pneumothorax, a condition in which air becomes trapped in the pleural space, causing the lung to collapse.
  • Is ICD better than pacemaker?
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) looks similar to a pacemaker, though slightly larger. It works very much like a pacemaker. But the ICD can send an energy shock that resets an abnormal heartbeat back to normal. Many devices combine a pacemaker and ICD in one unit for people who need both functions.
